A big name player has won the Open at Pebble four out of four times and I suspect this year will be no different. If I had to place a bet, my money would be on Mickelson for 2010.

Pavin needs "brain scan"

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin recently stated that Tiger Woods would not automatically make the 2010 team.

"I'm not going to treat Tiger any different than any other player," Pavin told Reuters. "He's certainly not going to be an automatic pick."

Hmmmm. Interesting strategy.

"He's just going to be treated like everyone else. I'd love to have him on the team but I want him to be playing well."

First off, why is Pavin making these comments now? They are pointless. Tiger still has three major championships to play, as well as 5-7 regular events before the Ryder Cup even begins.
Why not see if he turns his game around over the summer before making this statement?

Plus, we're talking the number one player in the world, 14 majors, years of experience on Ryder Cup teams, not to mention probably being the best match play golfer of all time. He did go 5-0 last year at the Presidents Cup.

Even if Tiger is still struggling with his game at the time, there is no way there are 12 Americans that would be better than him.

Jack Nicklaus weighed in on the topic and had this to say.

"He’d need a brain scan if he left Tiger out of the team. Of course he should pick Tiger. The truth is that Tiger is going through some personal problems, which I’ve nothing to say about, and he’s also got some problems with his game, which he’s going to have to resolve himself. But Tiger will be in the team, I have no doubt.”

The Monday Caddie: Villegas wins, Couples on fire, Tiger's return imminent

Camilo Villegas won for the third time in his career at the Honda Classic. Villegas has had a stellar season so far with a third place at the World Match Play, tie for 8th at the Waste Management Open, and now a win. With the win, he moved up 21 spots to 3rd place in the Fed Ex Cup standings, and trails only Dustin Johnson and Steve Stricker.



Villegas has credited a new found attitude for his recent success. "I'm just very privileged to do what I do."He won the tournament despite not playing a practice round at the course and after flying in from Columbia where he gave a clinic the prior day. With his new attitude, his work ethic on the course and in the gym, and the confidence of having won again, look for him to have a monster season.



Champions Tour:



Fred Couples has now won twice and finished 2nd in three Champions Tour events. "When you are 50, you are the youngest guy out here and if you are a good player like I think I am, I thought I would have some opportunities to win out here", said Couples. It will be interesting to see how many wins he will get this year, especially in the majors.



Tiger's return:



As usual, there were a million Tiger headlines over the past week. Enough gossip already. The bottom line is Tiger appears to be practicing hard, working with Hank Haney again, and looks to be planning his return. If rumors are true, he will play the Tavistock Cup and at Bay Hill, where he has won six times previously.



The Masters is exactly one month away, and if he does return for it, it should be one of the most watched sporting events of all time. "I can't imagine in 100 years he's going to miss Augusta,"Jack Nicklaus told Golfweek.

Throughout his career:

• He won 18 majors (six Masters, four U.S. Opens, three British Opens, five PGA Championships)
• had 73 PGA Tour victories
• played on six Ryder Cup teams and was captain twice
• captained four President Cup teams
• won the PGA scoring title eight times
• won the PGA money title eight times
• won ten Senior Tour events, eight of which were majors

Early Fireworks at AT & T

Anthony Kim shot a course record 62 at the first round of the AT & T National which included eight birdies and no bogeys. Kim is the defending champion, and now seeks his third victory on the PGA Tour. Kim is capable of going very low and making a lot of birdies, which he proved at the Masters earlier this year when he set a record by making 11 birdies in one round.



He will have to fend off tournament host Tiger Woods, who shot a first round 64 and trails Kim by two, along with D.A. Points and Bryce Molder. This year Tiger has already won Arnold Palmer's tournament at Bay Hill and Jack Nicklaus's tournament at the Memorial, and now seeks his third win this year by claiming his own tournament.
