The idea that top players won't win the week before a major is flawed.
In theory it makes sense to think that the upper echelon will use pre-major events as practice for the ultimate test ahead and will be happy to settle for something around tied 10th.
But results suggest otherwise.
Last year Anthony Kim, Lee Westwood, Steve Stricker and Hunter Mahan all peaked seven days too early by winning the week before a major and, interestingly, all four line up for this week's Shell Houston Open in Texas.
Match Date: March 31st to April 3rd 2011
Place: Redstone Golf Club in the Houston suburb of Humble, Texas
Previews : The Shell Houston Open is a regular golf tournament on the PGA Tour.
That suggests you think very carefully before ruling out this quartet - or any of the big names taking part this week - on the grounds of being distracted by The Masters.
Stricker is ranked 9th in both main Putting categories this year while he's 2nd in Scrambling (amateurs will be left drooling by the fact that he gets up and down 72.73% of the time when he misses a green in regulation).
He's fresh after sitting out most of the slog that was the Florida Swing and if there are any doubts that this could be misconstrued for rusty it's worth noting that three of his last four wins have come after he's had a fortnight off - the same gap he's had going into this event.
Stricker also has a special affinity with this tournament as he explained a couple of years ago.
"It's been a great ride the last couple of years and I feel like I owe a lot here to Steve Timms and the Houston Golf Association who gave me a spot here and kind of felt like it all got started here and it kick-started my good play.
"I gained a lot of confidence from this event a couple years ago and have kind of rolled with it since, and this place means a lot. I enjoy coming here and the course is in great shape."
Stricker was referring to his third place here in 2006 - his best finish in a strokeplay event since the 1998 Greater Milwaukee Open!
That was certainly no one-off and he can also boast a 9th (2007) and an 11th (2008) in two of his other three starts at Redstone.
The Ryder Cup star, who has won five times over the last two seasons, has finished 4th, 9th, 29th and 18th in his four strokeplay starts in the U.S. this year so that looks a good foundation from which to kick on and gain his first success of 2011.
The Shell Houston Open will happen at the Redstone Golf Club Tournament Course which is located in Humble, Texas, and while this tournament is followed by an even bigger one, it is huge in its own right with an amazing field and a giant prize purse of $5,900,000. It will take place from March 31st to April 3rd and the defending champion, who will be back this year is Anthony Kim, taking home 500 points towards the FedEx Cup and a check for $1,044,000. Vaughn Taylor took runner up last year with -12 and Charl Schwartzel came in third with 11 under. Shell Houston Open live stream # Purse: $5.9 million # Winning Share: $1,044,000 # FedExCup Points: 500 It is the final PGA Tour event before the US Masters and Westwood will be renewing his Masters duel with Phil Mickelson from last year this week. Westwood lost out by three shots to Mickelson at Augusta and will be keen to unleash revenge in Texas and at the very least play himself into some sort of form. The world number two has struggled in 2011 after hitting the heady heights of world number one as he has failed to finish in the top ten this year. His form has been going in the right direction of late though with three top twenties in his last four and his recent record at Redstone is decent with an 11th place in 2009 and tied 8th last year.
