Money matters: Defending Valero Texas Open champion Adam Scott was on hand Tuesday when organizers for the tournament and Benefit for Children Golf Classic announced a record fundraising total of $9 million for children's charities.
It was the highest charity haul in tournament history and likely will again rank in the top three among all tour events this season.
"It's an incredible effort, especially this day and age," Scott said Wednesday. "You know, we all know it's such a big part of the PGA Tour, and it's nice that the players can get involved every now and again and see some of the effort that goes on behind the scenes.
"We get to play and enjoy playing golf, but so much goes on behind the scenes that's much more important than the entertainment that we're doing."
Spurs of the moment: Former Spurs players Bruce Bowen and Michael Finley were back on a team together when they took part in the Oak Dairy Farms Charity Pro-Am at AT&T Oaks Course. Bowen and Finley, both superb golfers, were part of the group with touring pro Pat Perez. Their total 12-under 60 score placed them in the top five for the event.
Coming and going: Bob Estes, who captured the Texas Open title in 1995, was added to this year's field when Matt Bettencourt withdrew for undisclosed reasons. Estes, 44, is an Abilene native and former University of Texas star.
Kicking off at the Valero Texas Open taking place in San Antonio, Texas from April 11 – 17, then at The Heritage Open in Hilton Head, South Carolina from April 21-24, Vu’s tents on the green will feature live golf tutorials through Vu’s videoconferencing system. Ranked as the No. 6 golf instructor, according to the Reader’s Digest list of “America’s 50 Greatest Teachers,” and having mentored golfers including Sergio Garcia and Jay Haas, Mr. Utley will provide tips and feedback to attendees on the art of the short game.
“Golf and business are very similar in that they both require a tremendous amount of attention,” said Devita Saraf, chief executive officer of Vu TelePresence. “As a tool to enable the mastery of both, Vu allows business owners and entrepreneurs to take advantage of technology in business and in golf to effectively balance both work/lifestyle demands.”
During the virtual golf clinics, individuals will be able to demonstrate their short game swing and receive on the spot feedback and tips from Mr. Utley. Mr. Utley currently trains various PGA and LPGA tour players, and also provides private lessons year round at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona, where he currently resides. For these events, he will be Vuing in from his Arizona clinic.
“Face to face instruction is an important factor in teaching the art of golf because it allows for real time feedback and correction,” said Stan Utley. “For the first time using Vu TelePresence, I’m able to provide the same level of personalized instruction to my students virtually without compromising the quality of my tutorial. As an entrepreneur, this technology will augment my business offering and directly impact my bottom line.
Valero Texas Open Golf Past Champions and History
The third oldest event on the PGA Tour, the Valero Texas Open started life as the Texas Open in 1922. While it has always been played in San Antonio, the venue as well as the name have changed over the years. It was variously known as the Texas Open, San Antonio Texas Open, Texas Open Invitational, San Antonio Open Invitational. It was the HEB Texas Open from 1990 - 1993, the La Cantera Texas Open from 1995 - 1997, the Westin Texas Open from 1998 - 2000 and since 2002, the Valero Texas Open.
Valero is a Fortune 500 oil and gas company based in San Antonio. In spite of the rumors in my area, it is NOT owned by Venezuelan strong man Hugo Chavez. The name comes from MisiĆ³n San Antonio de Valero, better known as the Alamo.
The Texas Open has been held at a large number of venues over the years. It was played at Brackenride Park Golf Course from 1922 to 1940, with a brief 1927-1928 switch to the Willow Springs Golf Course. It returned to that course from 1941 - 1949. Willow Springs Golf Club was the host from 1941 - 1949; and then either Brackenridge Park or the Ft. Sam Houston Golf Course until 1960. From 1961 - 1966, it was played at Oak Hills Country Club, before moving for the 1967 - 1970 seasons to Pecan Valley Golf Club. The years 1972 - 1976 found the tournament at Woodlake Golf Club. Oak Hills Country Club got the tournament back from 1977 to 1994. From 1995 - 2009, it was played at the Resort Course at La Cantera. Finally, in 2010, it began playing at the TPC at San Antonio.
The 2010 event offers a purse of $6,100,000 and is a regular FedEx Cup event. The winner takes home $1,098,000.
The tournament is notable for several reasons. First, it was there in 2003 that Tommy Armour set a PGA Tour record low score of 254 for a 72 hole tournament. The Tour’s first 60 was shot there in 1951 by Al Brosch. It’s also the site of Texas native and PGA Tour legend Ben Crenshaw’s first Tour victory.
