A big name player typically wins the Masters, with a few exceptions over history.
Past champions
Tiger and Phil have won six combined since 1997. Tiger has four and Phil two.
Both players are dealing with major off the course issues as everyone knows. Tiger hasn't played competitively in 5 months and it seems highly unlikely he could win with the circus that has surrounded his life. However, if anyone in the world could win while dealing with these circumstances, it's him.
As for Phil, he typically has one or two wins by this time of year, but hasn't been in contention much and his game has been very inconsistent. He did shoot a 58 a few weeks ago in a practice round and has shown signs of becoming sharper, but hasn't put it all together. A major concern has been the health of his wife Amy, who is still dealing with breast cancer. This obviously makes it difficult for Phil to focus solely on golf.
With that all being said, this is the Masters, the biggest and most prestigious tournament in the world, and superstars typically tend to raise their games to the highest levels when it really counts. We shall see if either of these two can put it all together despite so many off the course difficulties.
